This is a reduction compared to 2023, when the Mozambican state lost 716 million meticais (€10 million at the current exchange rate) in corruption cases, according to the survey by the Mozambican Attorney General’s Office.
In total, in 2024, the Public Prosecutor’s Office registered 162 cases of corruption, with the main offences being embezzlement and fraud in public procurement, as well as violations of the duties of state officials and agents.
“We continue to be concerned about the registration of a considerable number of criminal cases involving public servants from key sectors of the state, namely education, health, civil identification, migration, police and justice,” reads the MP’s document.
Among the main constraints in the fight against corruption, according to the Public Prosecutor’s Office, is the crime of illicit enrichment, which, under the legislation, “is restricted only to public servants”.
“It is therefore urgent to revise the Penal Code, in order to reinstate the rule that punished both public servants and private entities,” the document added.
