Sands China Ltd. recently observed Earth Hour 2025 by switching off the exterior lights and non-essential indoor lighting of all its properties.

This marks the 17th straight year that Sands China has participated in this global environmental initiative, underscoring its commitment to sustainable practices and energy conservation in Macau.

In addition to its annual Earth Hour participation, the company has been dedicating one hour each month to turning off exterior lights, signage, and marquees across its resorts — a practice that began in 2013.

This regular observance reinforces the message of energy conservation and combatting climate change. Sean McCreery, Executive Vice President of Operations for Sands China Ltd., said: “Let’s dim the lights not just for an hour, but remain mindful year-round of our energy usage as we display this powerful symbol of our ongoing dedication to a brighter, eco-friendly future for generations ahead.”

A unique feature this year was the “Pedal for Your Smoothie” activity held from March 17 to 22 at the health clubs of Sands China’s resorts. Guests and club members pedaled on special stationary bikes connected to blenders, converting kinetic energy into electricity to create fresh fruit smoothies.

This creative initiative not only highlighted innovative ways to integrate energy saving into everyday activities like exercise and sports but also engaged participants in experiencing human-powered clean energy firsthand.

Sands China’s robust sustainability program has delivered impressive results since 2019, with cumulative energy savings of 42 million kWh — an amount sufficient to charge approximately 700,000 electric vehicles. Notable achievements from 2024 include:

  • Completing 17 ECOTracker projects that saved 13,848 MWh of electricity
  • Achieving carbon neutrality in all properties’ convention and exhibition areas
  • Generating 33% of its electricity from renewable energy sources
  • Offsetting its carbon footprint by enabling Cotai Water Jet passengers to purchase carbon credits via the Sands ECO360 Carbon Neutral Programme
  • Securing ISO14001 EMS certification for all five properties in Macao

In recognition of its sustained efforts, the company received Top 1% rankings in both the China and the Global editions of the S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook 2024 and earned placements on the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) World and DJSI Asia Pacific for the third and fourth consecutive year, respectively.

These environmental achievements are part of the broader Sands ECO360 global sustainability strategy led by parent company Las Vegas Sands Corp.

The strategy integrates energy saving, resource recycling, conservation, and community engagement to minimize environmental impact and promote sustainable building development and resort operations.
