Jan-May visitor tally surpassed 14 million – MGTO director

The number of tourist arrivals in the first five months of 2024 has exceeded 14 million, with a daily average of over 93,000, according to preliminary data revealed on Sunday by Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) director Helena de Senna Fernandes, as quoted by public broadcaster TDM

This figure translates into a year-on-year increase of about 50%, recovering to 82.5% of the same period in 2019.

The preliminary data shared by the MGTO director indicates that about 9.9 million visitors were mainland Chinese tourists, bringing this segment to 81% of the pre-pandemic level for the same period. Visitors from Hong Kong have recovered to 97.1% of 2019 levels, while the number of tourists from Taiwan (324,000) has recovered at a slower pace, reaching 73.4% of pre-COVID levels.

The number of visitors from overseas—a major focus of the SAR’s tourism authorities in recent months—reached 978,000, with a daily average of over 6,400 visitors to Macau. This represents a year-on-year increase of 1.75 times, bringing the figure to almost 67% of the same period in 2019.
