The congress, organized by the Lusophone Arbitration and Mediation Association (ALAM), and the support of the permanent Secretariat of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries (Macao) and the local concessionaire MGM. The event will be held at the University of Saint Joseph, in Macau, responsible for the Macau Academy for Alternative Dispute Resolution (MACADR). There will be 24 speakers from Portuguese-speaking countries, Macau, and mainland China.
The opening day will feature important interventions including a programmatic speech on the global state of arbitration in Lusofonia by Professor Rui Medeiros and Dr. Filipa Cansado de Carvalho. Dr. Fan Yang will give a speech on the global situation of arbitration in China, adding a perspective from mainland China.

The first day’s session will delve into specific arbitration practices in each of the Portuguese-speaking jurisdictions, allowing participants to gain an in-depth look at the nuances of arbitration in Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Macau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and Timor-Leste and a session on Lusophone Arbitral Awards, their requirements, and effects.

A series of special sessions will be held on October 12th. The agenda includes sessions on Macau’s central role in Sino-Lusophone arbitration and analysis of arbitration in the Greater Bay Area. The day will end with a session highlighting the crucial role of young arbitrators in promoting Portuguese-speaking arbitration, committing to nurturing the next generation of arbitration professionals.
“The objectives of the Congress are, firstly, to bring together arbitrators from Mainland China, Macau, and Portuguese-speaking Countries in discussing the advantages of Macau as one of the arbitration venues for resolving possible conflicts arising from trade between the businesspeople from countries participating in Forum Macau. Secondly, the aim is to centralize and promote, in a practical way, knowledge about the arbitration systems of Mainland China, Macau, and Portuguese-speaking Countries so that Macau can, with the contribution of all these arbitrators, fulfill its mission as a Platform”, says the president of the ALAM board, Bruno Nunes to PLATAFORMA.
ALAM is a non-profit institution, with the objective of “the promotion of the resolution of disputes between Portuguese-speaking parties within Lusophony itself”, says the chairman of the General Assembly, Leonel Alves.
