Macao scientist Leong Chi-Man delivered seminars at The Venetian Macao on April 11, where he discussed the importance of biodiversity and its connection to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Leong also led a BioBlitz activity, guiding participants to explore and record various plant and animal species in the hotel’s green belt. The aim was to deepen participants’ understanding of local biodiversity and encourage their participation in the CNC.
Sands China organized two outdoor parent-child field trips, where Leong provided on-site guidance on how to explore and document the biodiversity of Macao’s ecological zones. The trips aimed to encourage team members to organize similar activities with their children, fostering physical and mental development and promoting environmental awareness.
During the four-day CNC, Sands China held a Biodiversity Photography Competition for its team members. The competition challenged participants to observe their environment, capture images of organisms using their mobile phones, and upload them to the iNaturalist platform. The best submissions will receive a MOP 300 voucher for use at eco-friendly shops.
These activities resulted in the addition of nearly 3,000 species observation records to Macao’s biodiversity database, including over 700 wild species. Sands China’s support has made a positive contribution to local scientific research and conservation efforts.
Sean McCreery, Executive Vice President of Operations for Sands China Ltd., expressed the company’s satisfaction in organizing these activities to support the City Nature Challenge. He emphasized Sands China’s commitment to minimizing the environmental impact of resort operations and protecting the local ecological environment.
Sands China’s environmental sustainability efforts are part of the Sands ECO360 global sustainability strategy of its parent company, Las Vegas Sands Corp. Sands ECO360 focuses on energy saving, resource recycling, conservation, and community engagement to minimize the company’s environmental footprint and lead in sustainable building development and resort operations.
