Putin surprises and overthrows Defense Ministry ally

Five days after assuming his fifth term as president of Russia, Vladimir Putin took one of his most surprising decisions since deciding to invade Ukraine in 2022: he fired the Minister of Defense, his former ally Serguei Choigu, and the powerful secretary of the Security Council of the country, Nikolai Patrushev.

The movement occurs at a time when Russian forces are taking the initiative in the invasion of the neighboring country, breaking through defenses in eastern Ukraine and beginning an offensive on a new front to the north.

On Thursday (9), Putin was with Choigu during the Second World War Victory Day parade. At the time, the Russian president outlined the risk of a third global conflict, this time with the West.

According to the Kremlin, Putin chose economist Andrei Belousov for the role of Choigu, who is 68 years old and had been in office for 11 years and 6 months, being the longest-serving head of Russian Defense since the end of the Soviet Union in 1991. The outgoing minister is one of Putin’s closest allies, with photos of them both on holiday in Siberia becoming famous a few years ago.
