Trump sweeps Iowa, but the road to the White House has obstacles

The former president has to win the Republican primaries and avoid surprises in New Hampshire, ensure that the Supreme Court does not remove him from the race and that the legal proceedings do not make a dent and, finally, defeat Democrat Joe Biden in November.

Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, but in the run-up to the November elections he is behaving (at the polls and outside) as if he were in the White House. The victory achieved in the Iowa caucus, where he was 30 points behind his opponents, is a record for a Republican who is not in power. But the former president can no longer start packing his bags to return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, in Washington. He has three concrete challenges ahead of him: winning the primaries, ensuring that the Supreme Court does not remove him from the race and achieving what he was unable to achieve four years ago, defeating Joe Biden.

The Iowa caucus, where he had lost in 2016, ended almost before it started – it only took 31 minutes for Trump to be declared the winner. For weeks now, polls have pointed to his victory by a significant margin. After counting the votes, Trump received 51%, with Florida governor Ron DeSantis coming in second place, with 21.2%. A slight surprise, given that former governor of South Carolina and former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, had been gaining strength. But she ended up with 19.1%.
