American rescued after nine days in Turkish cave

The American speleologist who fell ill at the beginning of the month at the bottom of a cave in Turkey was rescued on Monday night, the Turkish Speleological Federation announced.

“Mark Dickey has been removed. The rescue operation has been successfully completed,” the federation emphasised. Mark’s parents, Debbie and Andy Dickey, emphasised in a statement their “indescribable relief” at the rescue of their son “in stable condition”.

Mark Dickey, 40, suffered an abdominal haemorrhage while exploring the Morca cave system near Mersin (south) with an international team. Around 190 specialists from Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland and Turkey took part in the rescue, including doctors, paramedics and experienced speleologists.

According to Cenk Yildiz, head of the Turkish Emergency Aid Agency in the region, who visited the scene, the American received plasma bags and serum to stabilise his condition. The stretcher-lifting operations through the galleries, sometimes lifted vertically, began on Saturday afternoon in stages.
