Japanese restaurants in Macau search for alternative sources after import ban

Macau's Japanese food restaurants have been compelled to seek alternative sources after a fresh ban on food imports from 10 Japanese prefectures and regions came into effect on Thursday.

Chan Chak Mo, who oversees a food and beverage industry association, told media on Thursday that preparations are currently underway as restaurant owners have turned to South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, and the United States for possible replacements.

“A portion of the seafood being sold on the market is not authentic Japanese goods,” said Chan. “The seafood is caught in other waters and then packaged and processed in Japan.”

According to him, a range of 20 to 30 restaurants rely on six trading firms for the import of Japanese products by air in Macau.
