Top court publishes decision that made Bolsonaro ineligible for eight years

The Superior Electoral Court (TSE in its Portuguese acronym) published on Tuesday (1st) the decision that sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro to eight years of ineligibility. The ruling was issued during a session on June 30.

The document consists of 433 pages and contains the full record of the trial, including the votes of the ministers and the reasoning that led to the trial’s outcome.

With the publication of the decision, Bolsonaro’s defense can file appeals to try to challenge certain parts of the ruling.

The lawyers can appeal to both the TSE itself and the Supreme Federal Court (STF). Three of the seven TSE ministers are also part of the STF and may take part in the trial of any appeal.

According to the internal rules of the Court, the ministers who serve on the electoral court are not automatically prevented from ruling on constitutional matters in cases originating from the TSE.
