Mozambique: Cabo Delgado restores road to Mucojo for inhabitants to return

Mozambique’s government will rehabilitate the road between Macomia and the administrative post of Mucojo, damaged by the rains and affected by the displacement of the population due to terrorist actions, the governor of Cabo Delgado province, Valige Tauabo, announced on Tuesday.

“We were already doing some work, but the rain came and spoilt it again. This time it will take engineering to ensure durability” said the governor in the community of Marrupa, Chiúre district.

Valige Tauabo, who was speaking during the certification ceremony of model families of community health and hygiene, said that the rehabilitation of the Macomia – Mucojo road will consist of levelling and filling potholes, in six sections, locatable, in a 40-kilometre-long section, to give better mobility to families who are returning, after fleeing due to terrorist actions.

“The houses were destroyed a lot by the rains since the inhabitants had left and others due to the actions of the terrorists, but there are people there, and we have to make the road to ensure mobility,” he added.

Cabo Delgado province has been facing armed insurgency for almost six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.

The armed insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts near gas projects, but new attacks have emerged south of the region and in neighbouring Nampula province.

The conflict has displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and claimed around 4,000 lives, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.
