Mediterranean country suffers from intense heat waves, as well as North Africa; in Algeria, 34 die in forest fires

In a critical situation, Greece is experiencing a moment of “war against forest fires”, inflamed by the strong heat wave that hits the country. Authorities evacuated thousands of people from two tourist islands as firefighters continued to work.

Almost 2,500 people were preventively evacuated from the Greek island of Corfu, located off the coast of Albania, this Monday (24). In Rhodes, which is close to the Turkish coast, more than 30,000 tourists had to flee on Saturday (22) and Sunday (23), for the same reason.

“Greece is at war with fires,” Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told parliament on Monday. “We still have three difficult days due to the high temperatures.”

The Mediterranean country has been affected by one of the most intense heat waves in recent decades, with temperatures reaching 46°C over the weekend, making it difficult for firefighters to work.

On the island of Corfu, authorities sent an alert message to the cell phones of residents and visitors in several locations to leave “their homes as a precaution”.
