Former PSG director of football, Leonardo criticizes Mbappé and calls for the player to leave

Mbappé’s future at Paris Saint-Germain remains undecided. The Frenchman is constantly losing leadership of the team, whether with the players or the fans, and a transfer could become imminent. In an interview with L’Équipe, former football director Leonardo spoke about the striker’s current situation.

Paris Saint-Germain existed before Kylian Mbappé and will exist after him. He has been in Paris for six years and in those six seasons five different clubs have won the Champions League and none have had Mbappé in their ranks. This means that it is quite possible to win this competition without him. For the sake of PSG, I think the time has come for Mbappé to leave, no matter what.

The club’s great ambition is to win the Champions League. Since 2012, when it received financial investment for being bought by QSI (Qatar Sports Investment), PSG has been present in all editions, but only reached the final in one, in 2019/20. The reality of the conquest seems to be far away, even more so with the departure of Lionel Messi and a potential sale of Neymar.

At the age of 24, Mbappé has held the title of best player on the team for some years, but the player’s posture has generated criticism. For Leonardo, the Frenchman does not have the potential to hold a position of leader.

With his behavior over the past two years, Mbappé shows that he is still not a player capable of truly guiding a team. He’s a great player, not a leader. He’s a great goalscorer, not a creative. It’s hard to build a team around him.
