Ukraine claims progress in Bakhmut but admits difficult situation in the South

The city was taken a month ago by the Wagner Group, which, in the meantime, handed over its positions to the Russian army.

Ukrainian military officials this Sunday claimed advances on the Bakhmut front, in the Donetsk region (east), where the Russian army is held back in some spots, but admitted that the situation remains difficult in the south.

“On the Bakhmut front, we are succeeding, the defense forces are advancing, and the enemy is trapped in some places,” Ukrainian Ground Forces Commander Oleksandr Sirski wrote in Telegram.

Sirski accompanied his words with a video showing the “excellent work” of the Privid (Phantom) group of the Separate Presidential Brigade Hetman Bogdan Khmelnitski.

“A sniper with the alias “Alpha” is in action. He killed the enemy with a shot from 1,200 meters away,” he wrote, adding that while the sniper was working, the group was being pursued by a Russian drone, which was also shot down.

Bakhmut was taken about a month ago by the Wagner Group mercenaries, in the longest and bloodiest battle since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, at the cost of high casualties on both sides, before the private company led by Yevgeny Prigozhin abandoned the place and to cede their positions to the regular Russian army and to wage a failed rebellion against Moscow’s military leadership.

However, the Ukrainian forces did not give up on Bakhmut, and, after his fall, they are trying to reconquer him in short advances through the north and south of the city, which has become a symbol for Kiev and Moscow, in a struggle that, in addition to air and artillery means, , involves trench warfare, and it dates back to August of last year.
