The San Antonio Spurs, led by veteran Gregg Popovich, won the number 1 in the 2023 North American Basketball League (NBA) draft, which should be French giant Victor Wembanyama.
In the draw held on Tuesday in Chicago, the team from the state of Texas was one of three, along with the Houston Rockets and the Detroit Pistons, with a 14% probability of obtaining the number 1 in the draft.
This is the third time the Spurs have won the draft lottery, having selected David Robinson in 1987 and Tim Duncan in 1997 on the previous two occasions, key members of the dynasty that won five NBA titles. “I’m really excited,” said team principal Peter J. Holt.
Victor Wembanyama “is an incredible young man” and “clearly appears to be the best talent of this generation,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver told ESPN television during the lottery broadcast.
