Russia rains drones on Ukraine on eve of Victory Day celebrations

Russia on Monday launched its biggest wave of airstrikes against Ukraine in months, according to officials in the invaded country. According to Vitali Klitschko, mayor of Kiev, 60 Iranian-made kamikaze drones were launched against the country, 36 of which against the capital alone.

Although most of the drones were shot down, debris fell in a residential area of the capital, leaving five injured. Already in Odessa, a food warehouse would have been set on fire by the attack.

Hours later, authorities in the Kherson region, once taken over by the Russians and later reconquered by the Ukrainians, said Russian artillery left at least eight wounded in two local villages, including a 9-year-old child. The action takes place on the eve of the date on which Moscow celebrates Victory Day, which celebrates the success of the Allies against Nazi Germany in 1945. Although the West celebrates the mark on May 8, nations in the orbit of the former Soviet Union they do so on the 9th of the same month.
Moscow is preparing a big parade for this Tuesday, as the holiday is considered the most important on the Russian calendar under President Vladimir Putin. The triumph over Nazism is, after all, one of the arguments that permeate the Russian leader’s attempts to justify the invasion of Ukraine.
