Military spending reached a “historic high” of US$2,240 billion (2,036 billion euros) in 2022 worldwide, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) revealed on Monday.
This figure represents 2.2% of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP), the same document advanced, indicating that the three countries that spent the most in 2022 – the United States, China and Russia – accounted for 56% of global military spending.
On a global scale, this is the eighth consecutive year of increased investment in the defence sector.
“The continued increase in global military spending in recent years is a sign that we live in an increasingly insecure world. States are strengthening their military forces in response to the deteriorating security environment, which is not likely to improve in the near future,” warned SIPRI researcher Nan Taian, quoted in a statement.
