The photograph, taken by Evgeniy Maloletka for the Associated Press news agency on March 9, 2022, reveals a pregnant and injured woman, Iryna Kalilina, being carried on a stretcher against a backdrop of destruction after an attack by Russian military forces on a maternity hospital in Mariupol. Iryna Kalilina, 32, and her baby died shortly afterwards.
Speaking to Efe news agency, the award-winning journalist admitted it was difficult “to receive an award for photographs of people who have already died”.
“It is very painful to understand. These are photographs of horror. This is not why I wanted to receive an award, but this is how it is, this will accompany me forever. At the same time, it is important to show the world what is happening in Ukraine,” he said.
