Mozambique: Maputo port to help unblock main road to South Africa

Lusa

The Port of Maputo Development Company (Sociedade de Desenvolvimento do Porto de Maputo) announced on Tuesday the construction of a truck park to decongest the main road linking it to South Africa.

The export of chromium and ferrochrome from South African mines via the Mozambican port usually leaves several stretches of the N4 road full of heavy vehicles.

A truck traffic management park will be built on an area of 20 hectares donated today by the provincial government, with commercial and port processing services, “which will make things more efficient,” the port company said in a statement.

The area is part of the administrative post of Pessene, in Moamba district.

The first phase of the work will last around three months for cleaning, earth moving, fencing and inclusion of basic water and power services and will cost approximately US$3 million (€2.73 million).
