Alexei Navalny, Putin’s Russian opponent, is sick and untreated in prison

The Russian opponent Alexei Navalny, arrested for two years, is sick and without medical assistance, denounced his lawyer, Vadim Kobzev, pointing to a “very strange” situation.

On the social network Twitter, Kobzev wrote, referring to Navalny: “On the night of Friday to Saturday, an ambulance was called to his cell, because of a stomach ailment, which got worse”.

He added that Navalny, 46, suffers from “an unknown illness for which nobody treats him” and that, “according to his medical file, in the last 15 days he has lost eight kilos”.

He also revealed that the packages with medicines that Navalny’s mother sends to her son “are returned to him”, so he cannot receive them.

Kobzev also reported that his client suffers “crises” and said he “does not exclude” an attempt by the authorities to let the opponent’s health “deteriorate, not abruptly, but progressively” and demanded that “toxicological and radiological tests be carried out”.

Earlier in the year, Navalny had claimed he had flu-like symptoms and was deprived of satisfactory access to medical care. His supporters denounced an attempt by the Kremlin to “kill” him little by little.

Navalny, a pet enemy of Vladimir Putin and an opponent of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, was arrested in the Russian Federation in January 2021, upon returning from abroad, after having suffered serious poisoning, which he attributed to the Kremlin.

In March of the same year, he was sentenced to nine years in prison under a “severe” regime, on charges of “fraud” that he says are fictitious.
