Shooter who killed six at school in the US planned other targets

The manifest found at the home of the gunman who killed six people on Monday at an elementary school in Nashville, Tennessee, indicates that other locations would be possible targets, police said.

The document “shows that there was going to be a mass shooting in several locations, and the school was one of them,” Nashville Police Chief John Drake told US television.

The shooter, who killed three children and three adults at The Covenant School, a private Christian school founded in 2001 and with nearly 200 students, was a former student of the establishment and would have planned the attack, according to police authorities.

Drake indicated that Audrey Hale, who died at the scene, would have premeditated the shooting, according to school maps, which detailed the entrances to the building and the location of the security cameras, found by the authorities in the house where he lived with his parents.

Hale, 28, a native of Nashville, had no criminal record and walked into the school with two semiautomatic weapons and at least one handgun.

The deadly shooting comes as communities across the country reel from a spate of school violence, which includes a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, last year and a shooting last week in Denver that injured two administrators.

This is already the 128th mass shooting in the United States since the beginning of the year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting when at least four people are shot, excluding the shooter.

The United States, where approximately 400 million firearms circulate, is frequently affected by deadly shootings, including in schools.

Since the beginning of 2023, there have been at least 30 incidents involving firearms in schools in the United States, which have left eight dead and 23 injured, according to data from the organization Everytown for Gun Safety.
