More than 33,000 killed in earthquakes in Syria and Turkey

The death toll from the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday has risen to 33,000 as firefighters search for possible survivors nearly a week after the tragedy.

According to official data released this Sunday (12), Turkey already accounts for 29,605 victims, and Syria, 3,574, considering both the areas under control of the Bashar al-Assad regime and the rebel zones. With that, the total death toll reached 33,179. Today, a seven-month-old baby was rescued in the Antakya district of Hatay province in southern Turkey after being trapped under rubble for 140 hours. The information was revealed by the state news agency Anadolu.

In the neighborhood of Nizip, in the same province, a girl, whose age was not revealed, was pulled from the rubble 146 hours after the earthquake. In addition, a 35-year-old man was rescued alive by Turkish and Romanian teams after 149 hours.

Earlier, Turkish authorities arrested more than 100 builders in the 10 provinces affected by the earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale. All are linked to some of the collapsed buildings and suspected of having violated the country’s building regulations.
