Australian Open bans Russia and Belarus flags

The Australian tennis federation banned the Russian and Belarusian flags from the Australian Open on Tuesday, at the request of the Ukrainian ambassador in Canberra, after supporters displayed the Russian flag.

“Flags of Russia and Belarus are prohibited at the Australian Open venue,” said Tennis Australia, adding that the ban is effective “immediately”.

“Our initial policy was that fans could bring them but not display them with the aim of causing disruption,” the association added in a statement.
