Asian destination welcomes the new year in a very special way

After months of turmoil, Sri Lanka has started to welcome international tourists again.

The first were travelers from Russia, who landed in the country on a Red Wings plane with 398 passengers, in what was the first direct fortnightly service between Moscow and the port city of Hambantota.

“The start of flights to Sri Lanka is a new milestone. A remarkable event for Red Wings, passengers and our countries”, underlined the company’s general director, Evgeny Solodilin.

The route complements existing flights between Moscow and Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, by Russia’s Aeroflot, which resumed in October after a four-month suspension.

Months of electrical blackouts, soaring inflation and critical shortages of food and fuel made life hell for Sri Lanka’s 22 million people in the first half of 2022.

In recent months, measures have been taken to allow tourists to return to the country.

The most significant is the reorganization of the electrical network, in order to guarantee stable energy in the resorts.

Among the areas targeted for improvements are also those that include the lush coastal beaches of the south and the mountainous region around Ella, famous for its high concentration of elephants.
