Chinese will have used TikTok to follow journalists and identify sources

The news is advanced by the France Presse agency, which cites an email from the general counsel of ByteDance, Erich Andersen. The message, which he had access to, reveals that several employees of the Chinese technology company had access to the data of two journalists who wrote about the company.

According to the e-mail, officials sought to identify links between Bytedance workers and a Financial Times reporter and a former BuzzFeed reporter who covered company-related matters using information obtained in confidence.

Employees identified by Bytedance as having been in contact with these journalists no longer work for the company, says the email, without giving further details on the total number of people involved.

In a statement made to AFP, ByteDance, a company based in Beijing, condemned the “unfortunate initiative that seriously violated the company’s code of conduct”.
