Bolsonaro supporters destroy cars and try to invade police headquarters

Supporters of the then Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro, tried to invade the headquarters of the Military Police, in Brasília, on Monday night, destroying several cars and burning a bus, following the arrest of a demonstrator.

“For now, we are acting with the police forces. All of our police forces (…) are on the streets” and “the order is to arrest the vandals”, said the governor of the Brazilian capital, quoted by the local press.

Police fired rubber bullets and fired tear gas at demonstrators.

About 200 demonstrators, who refuse to recognize Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory in the presidential elections, blocked some of the main roads in Brasilia. Due to the blockades, several people were trapped inside one of the largest shopping centers in Brasília, reported the local press.

The disturbances arose following the arrest of an indigenous man identified as José Acácio Tserere Xavante, by decision of the Federal Supreme Court, for having participated in anti-democratic demonstrations.

The Military Police of Brasilia also reinforced the security of the hotel where the President-elect of Brazil is staying, whose victory was confirmed on Monday by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

Since the presidential second round, on October 30, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters have taken to the streets to protest against the election results and demand “intervention” by the military to prevent Lula da Silva from taking office.

In front of the army headquarters, in Brasilia, is concentrated the largest manifestation of ‘Bolsonaristas’, who have created an authentic ‘parallel city’, from which they demand a military intervention to revoke the electoral result.

On Monday, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters gathered in the garden of the Alvorada Palace, the official residence of the head of state of Brazil, on what they considered to be “D-day” to prevent Lula da Silva from going up the ramp.

A few kilometers away, the ceremony at the TSE took place, during which Lula da Silva and the vice-president-elect, Geraldo Alckmin, received the diplomas confirming their victory in the October presidential elections and making them fit to assume their respective mandates on 01 January 2023.

Jair Bolsonaro met with the protesters near the Alvorada Palace, accompanied by a priest who preached to supporters.
