In a conciliatory tone, different from the usual, the Global Times wrote that the meeting on the Indonesian island of Bali, where the G20 summit is taking place until Wednesday, could “open doors” for “greater communication between China and the United States” and “ constitute a starting point” for further cooperation.
“China maintains continuity and stability in its policy towards the United States, and has always urged the US to do its part, which is not only in their mutual interest, but also meets the expectations of the international community,” he said.
The article is in line with the statements of both leaders after the meeting, in which they did not avoid the main points of tension in the relationship, including the issue of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory and which Washington has supported, trade disputes or the war in Ukraine, over which both condemned Moscow’s veiled threats to resort to nuclear weapons.
