Lula repudiates “coup speeches” and calls for investigation into protests

Brazil’s president-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said on Wednesday that “coup speeches” have no place in the country and called for an investigation into possible protest funders.

“There is no possibility of coup speeches,” Lula told journalists in Brasília, on a day when he visited the Supreme Court and met separately with the presidents of the two legislative chambers.

“These people who are protesting, sincerely, have no reason to protest. They should thank God that the difference was less than what we deserved to have votes,” he said.

Lula da Silva went further and stressed that “it is necessary to detect who is funding these protests that have no head or tail. Offenses to authorities, threats of closure, verbal aggression”.

President Jair Bolsonaro, who won 49.1% of the votes in the second round of the elections, compared to 50.9% for Lula, did not publicly congratulate or acknowledge the victory of his opponent, although he gave his team the green light to carry out the transition process.

After the defeat, the truck drivers union, which has been an ally of Bolsonaro, carried out roadblocks across the country and on Wednesday gathered at least 300 trucks in front of the army headquarters in Brasilia to call for military intervention. in order to keep Bolsonaro in power.

Faced with the protests and rejection of a part of the population aligned with Bolsonaro, Lula said that his government will have “no time for revenge or hatred. The time has come to rule.”
