Trudeau accuses China of trying to interfere with Canada’s democracy

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today accused China and other countries of seeking to interfere with the country’s democracy and develop “aggressive games” with the institutions of Canada and other democracies.

Trudeau’s remarks came hours after Canadian media outlets reported that Canadian intelligence services believe that China has set in motion an interference campaign, which includes funding at least 11 parliamentary candidates in the 2019 general election.

Trudeau said Canada has taken steps to “strengthen the integrity of the electoral process” and will continue to fight foreign electoral interference.

“Unfortunately, we are seeing that countries and state actors, whether China or others, continue to play aggressive games with our institutions, our democracies, so we are creating new tools”, he developed.

“The world is changing. And in some cases terrifyingly. We need to ensure that those who are on a mission to keep us safe every day are able to do so, so we will continue to invest in some of those tools and those resources necessary to do so,” he said.

Canadian television station Global News reported that in January intelligence services detailed to Trudeau a campaign launched by China that includes paying candidates related to the Communist Party of China, as well as placing agents in the offices of Canadian lawmakers to gain influence. .
