“Cristiano sees the fact of staying on the bench as an insult”

Former footballer and now coach Gary Neville supports Cristiano Ronaldo’s continuity at Manchester United, but argues that the Portuguese international has to realize that he cannot play every game and that, sometimes, he will have to go to the substitutes’ bench. In the opinion of the former right defender, CR7 sees it as an “insult” not to play at first.

“What I hope is that, like any other player approaching the end of his career, he accepts that he will not play every game and stays at Manchester United to help the team as he did on Sunday against Everton [marked the winning goal]. And so United will have a good season. If he stays, the club has a better chance of staying in the top four of the Premier League. Even if he doesn’t play every week and leaves the bench sometimes. I respect his mentality, he can’t conceive of not playing. He sees it as an insult. And people I respect a lot think he’s being disrespected when he’s on the bench. But I don’t see it that way. I think Erik ten Hag managed the situation very well”, commented the English international.
