Sanford C. Bernstein: Game recovery ‘increasingly uncertain’

Sanford C. Bernstein says that Macau’s casinos started the month of September with daily revenues of 88 million patacas. The pace of the sector’s recovery, says the consultant, is now increasingly uncertain due to outbreaks of COVID-19 in many Chinese cities.

Between the 1st and the 4th of September, gross gaming revenues increased by 12 percent compared to the last week of August: from 79 million to 88 million patacas per day. Sanford C. Bernstein says the sector’s recovery continues to be severely limited by various travel restrictions in China and that potential players are wary of traveling under threat of lockdown measures.

The consultant’s report reiterates that the reopening of borders to foreigners from 41 countries is a first step towards opening it to abroad, however, with the seven-day quarantines on arrival in Macau, the practical benefit of the measure is practically nil. With the outbreaks of COVID recorded in several Chinese cities, the consultant also says that in the short term the authorities of Mainland China should maintain the restrictions on travel that are in force.
