Group of French MPs visit Taiwan after China’s military maneuvers

A group of French deputies arrived in Taiwan today, forming the largest European delegation to visit the island since the Chinese military maneuvers recorded in August.

The delegation of five French deputies is led by Senator Cyril Pellevat, the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, adding that this is the fourth visit by French parliamentary representatives in a year.

The visit comes at a time when Taiwan is carrying out shooting exercises on a strategic island located between its coast and China.

Taiwan is under constant threat from an invasion from Beijing.

In early August, Beijing embarked on a show of force in retaliation for US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

China sent warships, missiles and fighter jets to the island for a week. They were the biggest and most aggressive drills since the mid-1990s.

In recent years, many European countries have shown more support for Taipei and authorities visit the island on a regular basis.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has further raised fears that China will do the same to Taiwan.
