All communities and villages will be visited until October 31

The Census 2022 begins today (10) in indigenous territories and runs until October 31. Indigenous people living on or off their lands, in urban or rural areas, and those from other countries will be registered. All communities and villages, regardless of whether they have been previously mapped or not, will be visited.

The first step is to explain the Demographic Census to the indigenous leaders and make them aware of the need to allow the enumerators to enter the villages. The manager of traditional territories and protected areas of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), Fernando Damasco, highlighted the need for a differentiated and respectful arrival in indigenous territories.

“The leadership has a fundamental role in the process, to explain to the community the importance of the survey and so that no one is afraid to answer because the information is protected,” said the manager.

The second activity will be the application of a questionnaire about the village or community, with questions about infrastructure, access to natural resources, education, health, habits and practices. Then, the census takers will visit all the dwellings to conduct interviews with the resident families.

According to IBGE, an indigenous person is a person who self-identifies as such, “The census taker or any other person from the collection team may not question the informant or cast doubt on their declaration,” says the institute.

According to IBGE, the 2010 Demographic Census was the first survey that registered the number of ethnic groups and indigenous languages existing in Brazil. It counted 896.9 thousand indigenous people, from 305 ethnic groups or peoples and speakers of 274 indigenous languages.
