Guterres demands an end to ‘suicide’ attacks on Ukraine’s nuclear plants

The UN Secretary-General on Monday called any attack on nuclear power plants “suicide” and called for the suspension of military operations in Zaporizhzhia and the opening of the Ukrainian plant to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

At a press conference in Tokyo, António Guterres stressed that “any attack on nuclear power plants is suicidal”.

“I hope these attacks stop. At the same time, I hope that the IAEA will be able to access the plant” in Zaporizhzhia, he added.

Ukrainian authorities on Friday accused Russian forces of carrying out three attacks near a reactor in Zaporizhzhia, although Moscow has controlled this territory since the start of the offensive.
