Luanda is “suffocated” by garbage due to debt of millions

Two hundred and 46 billion kwanzas is the amount in which the debt that the Provincial Government of Luanda (GPL) owes to the cleaning and sanitation companies that operate in the capital of the country is assessed, revealed Joana Lina Ramos Baptista Cândido.

The governor of Luanda said, when speaking at the first Ordinary Session of the Community Auscultation Council, that she began to feel pressure from the companies that operate garbage when she was only 15 or 20 days in the exercise of her functions. She managed the situation in the best possible way to cover the huge delays in payment for the provision of services that had been going on for several years.

She explained that, with much effort, some payments were made through the National Treasury, that is, the Ministry of Finance. However, between October and November, the companies sent a letter to the GPL stating that, from the first days of December 2020, they would suspend their activities.

Along this path, the GPL talked to each of the companies explaining the financial difficulties and the inability to settle the debt that already amounted to 246 billion kwanzas (about 310 million euros).
