Hunger continues to challenge the pandemic around Maputo

With a considerable proportion of people living in poverty or on the brink, the use of informal commerce to escape poverty is common in markets on the outskirts of Maputo. This activity continues to challenge the pandemic.

Lack of food on the table makes Maria Aida, 60 years old, leave home every day bound for the market in Laulane, Maputo.

The routine is outlined, even though she knows that the markets are the places with the greatest spread of covid-19 in the Mozambican capital and that she is already at an age considered at risk.

“I never stopped selling here on the market, even with the disease. Because what bothers us most is hunger. My husband also stopped working because of the pandemic. What if I do the same? What are we going to eat ”, asks the merchant.
