UN asks Colombia to ‘guarantee peace’ and implement agreement with FARC

UN undersecretary Amina Mohammed on Thursday asked the Colombian government to “guarantee peace” and implement the agreement signed in 2016 with the then FARC guerrilla, especially with regard to the role of women in the re-incorporation of former combatants.

The peace agreement “brings together great hope for women in Colombia and around the world”, and could help to recover the economy, affected by the new coronavirus. “This is the moment to leave no one behind and guarantee peace,” said the official, in a virtual statement jointly with President Iván Duque.

“Women are essential to peace-building, and I would like to invite the government to share, but also to speed up, the implementation of the agenda’s provisions, including additional resources and measures to strengthen this gender perspective,” said Amina, according to the official translation.
