Portuguese-speaking country was not the priority in the discussion of the European Union’s Foreign Affairs Council.
Last Monday, the European Union (EU) Foreign Ministers met in Luxembourg to discuss in the Foreign Affairs Council, among other things, the situation in Cabo Delgado, in northern Mozambique, as it was on the agenda.
However, the final report of the meeting says nothing about that Portuguese-speaking country, giving more emphasis to sanctions on Belarus and relations with Russia. In a succinct statement, sent to PLTAFORMA by e-mail, an adviser to the EU Council explains that “Mozambique was briefly addressed by the ministers in the context of current affairs. There were no articles written on the subject”.
Mozambique was expected to be a strong topic of debate during the meeting, after the announcement, last Friday, made by the EU ambassador in Maputo, Antonio Sánchez-Benedito Gaspar, that Brussels will help Mozambique in fighting armed groups classified as “Terrorists” in the province of Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country.
This month is three years after the start of the terrorist attacks in Cabo Delgado.
