American actor plays photojournalist W. Eugene Smith on film
This weekend, producer Vertigo Releasing released two posters and a trailer for “Minamata”, a film that brings Johnny Depp back to the big screen as the award-winning photojournalist W. Eugene Smith (1918 – 1978).
The plot, based on real facts, shows W. Eugene Smith’s powerful black and white documentary work, “Tomoko Uemura in Her Bath”, made by the American photographer in the small coastal village of Minamata, Japan, on a trip to document the horrible effects of a disease that, thanks to its coverage, was named after the place in 1971.
