Lack of will and China move Brazil away from Taiwan, says Taiwan diplomat

When the then pre-candidate for President of Brazil Jair Bolsonaro sought the representation of Taiwan in Brazil, in 2018, with a view to visiting the island and discovering his education model, which usually appears at the top of the international rankings, he was promptly attended by diplomat Tsung-Che Chang.

Two years later, the now representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brazil, an interlocutor of the Taiwanese government, says that, contrary to expectations, he no longer sees the Bolsonaro government’s desire to maintain relations with the island. In Chang’s assessment, one of the main obstacles to this approach is China’s geopolitical and commercial strength.

“There are many barriers, there is a lot of embarrassment that comes from China. The reality in Brazil is that the government thinks more about China than Taiwan. We don’t feel much like the Brazilian government wanting to talk to Taiwan, ”said Chang, in an interview with UOL.
