Pro-democracy deputies detained in Hong Kong for participating in the 2019 protests

Two Hong Kong pro-democracy MPs were arrested today, accused of participating in anti-government protests last summer, in an operation in which an additional 14 people were detained, according to local media

Police source heard by the France-Presse news agency (AFP) confirmed the arrest of MPs Lam Cheuk-ting and Ted Hui, as well as that of 14 more people, in an operation related to the pro-democracy demonstrations of July 2019.

The two opposition deputies on the Legislative Council (LegCo, the local parliament) are known for criticism of Chinese and Hong Kong authorities, with Hui being expelled from parliament during the discussion of the controversial law that criminalized insults to the Chinese anthem in late May.
