University of Macau appeals to Government for funding for Covid-19 vaccine

Salomé Fernandes

If the vaccine created by researchers at the University of Science and Technology of Macau and the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong is viable for distribution, local citizens may be among the first to have access. But that implies government investment. It was one of the main messages left yesterday by the director of the Faculty of Medicine at MUST

The path to a viable vaccine requires investment, and the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) yesterday asked the Executive for financial support for the next phase of research. “If the Government of Macau feels that this is something that it wants to help boost, it can commit itself to ensuring that when we have a vaccine on the table, the citizens of Macau will be among the first to have vaccines, rather than waiting a year. or two, ”said the director of MUST’s Faculty of Medicine at a press conference. The official added that the alternative is to wait for the distribution of other countries.

Mason Fok indicated that the university has a say in favor of a vaccine reserve for Macau and Hong Kong, but that without funding in the equation “the argument is not so strong”. According to his estimates, a new vaccine costs about 600 million Hong Kong dollars.
