India has reported 983 deaths and 68,898 infected with the new coronavirus in the past 24 hours, officials said today. With this new balance, the total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic rose to 54,849 and that of cases exceeded 2.9 million.
India has recorded at least 50,000 new infections a day since mid-July.
Four of India’s 28 states are responsible for 63% of deaths. The state of western Maharashtra and three southern states, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, are hardest hit.
The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed at least 787,918 deaths and infected more than 22.4 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the France-Presse news agency (AFP).
In Portugal, 1,788 people died of the 54,992 confirmed as infected, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.
The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
