Coffee, rice and beans are the favorite foods of Brazilians

The food tradition is still what it was in Brazil. Eggs and vegetables are still little consumed. This is what the Family Budget Survey released today by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IGBE) reveals

Coffee was the most consumed food by Brazilians (78.1% of the population) between June 2017 and July 2018, both for men (77.9%) and for women (78.4%). Then there are two products from the country’s traditional diet. One of them is rice, with 76.1% frequency of consumption, accompanied by beans, with a total of 60%.

The food least consumed frequently by Brazilians in the surveyed period was egg, with a total of 13.9%. The information is contained in the Family Budget Survey 2017-2018: Analysis of Personal Food Consumption in Brazil (POF 2017/2018), released today by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The study was carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Health. In the study, 46,164 residents of 20,112 households aged 10 years or older were heard in the study, who reported food consumption for two days.

The analysis shows that rice, beans and coffee were the foods most consumed by adolescents and adults, although with some reduction compared to the first survey, done in 2008/2009. Beans fell from 72.8% to 60% of the population and rice, from 84% to 76.1%.

Among the elderly, coffee consumption rose in the same comparison, from 86.6% to 87.1%.

IBGE researchers estimated that the consumption of fruits and vegetables remained well below the recommended level, although the consumption of raw salads has increased for both adolescents, adults and the elderly.
