Signal 10 was hoisted in Macau when Typhoon Higos passed just 20 kilometers off the coast of Macau SAR. After a night of lots of rain and wind, PLATAFORMA took to the streets in the morning, still with signal 8, and observed some destruction, but still nothing compared to the trail that Hato left in August 2017
Since 2017, two typhoons have forced authorities to issue a high alert. In September 2018, Typhoon Mangkhut’s passage through Macau left direct and indirect economic losses of MOP 1.74 billion.
Mangkhut caused 40 injuries and severe flooding in the territory, where the maximum signal of tropical storm was hoisted for several hours. In all, the authorities removed 5,650 citizens from the lowlands and 1,346 people went to emergency shelters.
A year earlier, typhoon Hato (later named by local Yamaneko authorities), despite being characterized by the same intensity as Mangkhut, caused 10 deaths, 240 injuries and damage estimated at 12.55 billion patacas.
