Hong Kong press tycoon released on bail

Press magnate Jimmy Lai, one of the leading figures in the Hong Kong pro-democracy movement, was arrested on Monday

Jimmy Lai had been arrested on Monday under the new national security law, imposed by China on Hong Kong. Jimmy Lai’s departure from a Hong Kong police station this Tuesday was accompanied by a noisy group of supporters, who defeated him, AFP reported.

Jimmy Lai, 72, is the owner of two pro-democracy and often critical Beijing publications, the Apple Daily and Next Magazine. Seen by many Hong Kong residents as a hero and sole tycoon in Beijing’s critical territory, Jimmy Lai is described in official Chinese media as “a traitor”, who inspired the pro-democracy demonstrations in the Chinese region, and the leader of a group of personalities accused of conspiring with foreign nations to harm China.
