Jorge Carlos Fonseca is the richest in Cape Verde

A ranking published by Africa Trendy reveals the wealthiest people in Cape Verde, where the country’s President, Jorge Carlos Fonseca, leads, without, however, advancing the value of his fortune

Born in Mindelo in 1950, Jorge Carlos Fonseca is a career politician, lawyer and also a university professor. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1991 to 1993.

He was also a researcher in the field of Criminal Law at the Max-Planck Institute in Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany, Professor of Law and Criminal Procedure at the Institute of Legal Medicine in Lisbon and Invited Associate Professor in Macau (1989-1990). He participated, as an expert hired by the United Nations, in the work of drafting the Constitution of Timor-Leste (2001 and 2002). He has been the President of the Republic since 2011, supported by the MpD, having become the fourth president of the independent country.

Secondly, there is another politician. Former Prime Minister Jorge Maria Neves, in office from 2001 to 2016, is a member of the African Party for the Independence of Cape Verde.

Born in 1960, he was a deputy of the National Assembly from 1996 to 2000. In the 2000 municipal elections, he was elected Mayor of the Municipality of Santa Catarina.

Manuel Inocêncio Sousa, also a politician, closes the podium. Born in Mindelo in 1951, he was Minister of Foreign Affairs between 2001 and 2002 and, later, Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Sea. From 1991 to 2001 he was a deputy of the National Assembly.

Carlos Veiga, former prime minister of Cape Verde from 1991 to 2000, comes in fourth place. Veiga was born in Mindelo in 1949, studied in Portugal and still lived in Angola, Conservative in the Civil Registry of the city of Bié, in Huambo. He was a deputy in the National Assembly and, in 2016, he was appointed Ambassador of Cape Verde to the United States of America.

Ulisses Correia da Silva is the next person in the ranking, occupying the fifth position. Born in Praia in 1962, he is the current prime minister of Cape Verde and belongs to the Movement for Democracy party, of which he is president.

Ulisses and Correia e Silva had an experience in the banking sector, between 1989 and 1994, having been director of the Administration Department of Banco de Cabo Verde. Also an entrepreneur, he was also Secretary of State for Finance between 1995 and 1998 and Minister of Finance between 1999 and 2000.

In the sixth position follows Janira Hopffer Almada who led the PAICV from 2014 to 2016. Born in 1978 in Praia, the lawyer is the daughter of the politician, writer and jurist, David Hopffer Almada.

In seventh place appears Guadalberto do Rosário. The politician, a former prime minister of Cape Verde, was born in São Nicolau in 1950. He was also Minister of Agriculture from 1991 to 1993 and Minister of Economic Coordination from 1995 to 2000.

The eighth position is occupied by Basílio Ramos. He came to politics as a member of the PAICV and was the fifth president of the country’s National Assembly. In addition to being a deputy, he was also Minister of Health.

Aristides Lima is the name that follows on the list. He held the position of President of the National Assembly from 2001 to 2011. Born on the island of Boa Vista 1955. He graduated in Journalism in Berlin, Germany, and exercised his profession from 1976 to 1978 in the “Voz di Povo”.

The last place in the top 10 belongs to Vera Duarte Pina. Human rights activist born in Mindelo in 1952, she was an adviser judge of the Supreme Court of Justice and an advisor to the President of the Republic. Debuted in literature in 1993 with the poetry book Amanhã Amadrugada. Her first novel in 2003, A Candidata, received the Sonangol Literature Prize.
