Was the explosion in Beirut an accident or a bomb?

Pedro Tadeu*

Can anyone explain the explosions at the port of Beirut? From what I read on the newspaper sites and what I see on television for more than 48 hours, I conclude that no, there is no clear explanation capable of making us understand what caused the death of at least 150 people, which hurt more of 5,000 individuals and that destroyed the homes of now 300,000 displaced people in the Lebanese capital.

There is almost unanimity in explaining the size and brutality of the explosions of last August 4 with the existence of 2750 tons of ammonium nitrate, deposited in warehouses without essential safety precautions and which, under the action of a heat source, would have transformed into a very powerful bomb, capable of causing a seismic shock of 3.5 on the Richter scale.

I will, although hesitant, uncritically accept this official version of the tragedy, but it provokes a question for which I can find nowhere a satisfactory answer: what, after all, was the source of heat that caused the ignition of nitrate from ammonium?
