Syrups with opiate trafficked from Macau may result from closed borders

Pharmacies in Macau sell cough syrups with opium derivatives over the counter. Data from the Judiciary Police point to the trend of trafficking from Macau to China, where these drugs are banned and do not rule out the possibility that the phenomenon is due to border restrictions that interrupted flows of narcotics such as heroin

Throughout this year, the Judiciary Police (PJ) discovered three cases of illegal drug trafficking and psychotropic substances involving cough syrups with controlled substances in their content. “In total, four suspects were arrested and 83 bottles of syrup were apprehended”, containing almost 10 liters of the product.

According to the authorities, in 2018 and 2019 there were no such cases, something that deserved a reading of the phenomenon. “The PJ does not rule out the possibility that they are related to border restrictions measures, since the three cases all occurred during the pandemic of the new type of coronavirus”, said the PJ.
