Life on the streets of Athens: the reality of refugees in Greece

When Amir Hussein was finally allowed to leave the horrible migrant camp in Moria, on the Greek island of Lesbos, it was to be the end of a yearlong odyssey.

“After (experiencing) hell in Moria, we didn’t expect to be on the streets of Athens,” says the 14-year-old Afghan boy, who slept in downtown Victoria Square last week.

About 100 mostly Afghan refugees have camped in the square in the past few days under temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit).

Amir, her parents and two brothers aged 2 and 7, received asylum more than a month ago, when they were allowed to leave Moria and sail for Athens.
